Microsoft is expanding the Xbox 360’s set-top box functionality by offering full 1080p HD movies with 5.1 surround sound through its Zune video service. Moreover, movie watchers will now be able to watch movies instantly instead of having to wait for the full download. In addition, our friends in ten additional countries will be able to enjoy the service.

On the music front, popular music discovery site Last.fm is getting a custom interface for use with the Xbox 360. What is great about the customization is that Microsoft isn’t just throwing up a browser and making the experience the same as on the PC, but worse. Instead they are actually taking the time to tailor the experience for the console.

Other random tidbits for our friends in the States and overseas:

Netflix has improved integration. No longer will users be bound to the shackles of the PC in order to load up their movies!

Microsoft has also partnered up with Sky TV, so UK and Ireland residents can watch HD soccer as well as movies and shows on demand.
