E3 2009 – New ‘Super Mario Bros.’ for Wii appropriately named ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’

While everyone suspected that Nintendo would announce a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii, nobody was actually expecting New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii will feature familiar gameplay with a new twist: cooperative play featuring up to four players. Just like the original Super Mario Bros., you’ll discover warp pipes, item blocks, and dozens of coins as you and your friends navigate the two-dimensional levels. To make the classic gameplay more cooperative-friendly, Nintendo has tweaked each item block to spit out one item per player. Players will also be able to execute cooperative moves, such as throwing each other and oncoming enemies. Nintendo also showed off a new Propeller Suit that enabled Mario to fly when the player jerked the Wiimote into the air.

Due sometime during the Holidays this year, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is sure to let fans of the original Mario games enjoy them in a completely new way – and with friends to boot!
