We take a look at Call of Duty: Black Ops - but this time with a whole extra dimension!

3D gaming has not impressed me thus far. Having played Resistance 3 and experienced some of the other 3D offerings on the floor, I was less than convinced that 3D will be the next big thing in gaming. Combining that with the fact that prolonged exposure to 3D makes me a little dizzy and that I am not exactly a fan of the Call of Duty franchise, I was expected yet another shrug of a Call of Duty: Black Ops showing. But I was wrong!

First off, I’m not sure about the technological specifics, but there seems to be two kinds of 3D technology being used: one that will make me dizzy and my eyes hurt, and one that is pleasant but still feels weird. For example: Avatar, the movie, was completely okay, but the screen before the movie that asked us to put on my glasses was completely blurry. Black Ops has the pleasant kind of 3D, where the depth of field just literally adds a dimension to the visuals without being too distracting. They demonstrated two single player missions and a multiplayer mode, and everything looked really cool. Nothing actually jumped out of the screen at us, but eventually I presume games will have bullets flying by our heads and we can watch the tracer lines come out of our screens to make us feel like we’re on Omaha beach. One thing I particularly enjoyed is the red dot from the laser actually feeling like it’s on the target. It’s pretty hard to describe the experience and we can’t show any video (one of the downsides of a 3D demonstration), but I think Call of Duty fans would not be disappointed if they invested in a pair of 3D glasses – if they already own a 3D ready television or video card.

Another thing that was cool about the demo was that there was an element of Real-time Strategy type gameplay in one of the missions, where you direct the squad to take cover or hide in buildings in order to avoid patrols. Sometimes there would be an action sequence when the player would go into first person mode to deal with the opposition first hand, and then revert back to the RTS mode. It helps to break the feeling that Black Ops is just generic First Person Shooter #4324255669.

The Activision rep said that the 3D feature is available on both PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as PC for people who have a fancy Nvidia card that supports the technology. I might actually be tempted to try a Call of Duty game since the original offering. Call of Duty: Black Ops releases for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii on November 9th, 2010, but again: Only the first three will have the 3D option.

Side note: My favourite part of the demo was at the end, when Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak came in to look at ‘Black Ops’. From the EA NHL Rookie event, we had heard from Nazem Kadri that the Leafs were more into ‘Call of Duty’ than EA’s NHL games, so maybe the rumours are true! I did later spot Mr. Kessel playing ‘Virtua Tennis’ with the Move controller and heard him exclaiming that it was “awesome!”

Play a six year old WWII PC classic for 1200 MSP ($15 USD).

How about that Modern Warfare 2? I hear Activision has managed to pull in something like $3 million from it. And what better way to celebrate Infinity Ward’s latest success than playing the game that started it all! Anyone who picked up the various collector’s editions of Modern Warfare 2 got a code for Call of Duty Classic in the box, but as of this week, the game’s available to all, for 1200 MSP ($15 USD on PSN).

Call of Duty Classic is a six year old PC game, brought to consoles for the first time. It runs in HD, but that’s pretty much it. All the original models, textures and levels are here. It’s not a super-impressive experience, and doesn’t even compare all that well to Call of Duty 2 (an Xbox 360 launch title), but it’s still very cool to have more Call of Duty in one place.

Like Call of Duty 2 (and Call of Duty 3, and World at War), Call of Duty Classic is a World War II shooter. There’s a single player game, spanning British, American and Russian campaigns, with a game style and over-the-top touches similar to the more modern versions of the game. The console versions suffer because of the PC roots, with weapon switching ending up a little awkward and significantly less hand-holding in the accuracy department.

Still, this is pretty fun stuff. I never played the first game, so it’s all new to me. Graphics, AI and some general design choices reflect that generation – dated. Taking the experience as a whole, it’s amazing how little the series has changed. The single player is exciting, iron sights are still great, although the lack of an off-hand grenade button is a bit of a drag. What can you do, though?

On the multiplayer end of things, the game supports lobby-based games of up to eight players, across more than a dozen maps and a handful of gametypes. Most of these are team-based, and there’s even a survival-style one named Behind Enemy Lines that pits unbalanced teams of Axis and Allies against each other. There’s none of the persistent character stuff from modern Call of Duty titles, so everyone’s on an even playing field.

It’s nice of them to offer multiplayer support, albeit for only eight players with no support for local split-screen or even LAN. That’s a little weak. Still, there’s a good amount of content packed into these modes, for those who enjoy the smaller games.

The asking price for all of this seems a bit on the steep side of things, given how limited the appeal is going to be. Looking back at classic titles is usually best reserved for those who have some sort of emotional interest in the game to begin with. As far as features and content goes, Call of Duty Classic seems pretty decent. So it’s just a matter of giving the trial a download and testing out the presentation.

And hey, at least there’s no jerks wielding akimbo shotguns or running around at the speed of sound knifing dudes in the back.

To all who begged for cooperative gameplay in Modern Warfare 2: Infinity Ward listened.

When we discovered that Activision brought Modern Warfare 2 to X’09 and was showing it behind closed doors, we activated our Dead Silence perk to sneak inside and take a peak. What we witnessed was top secret and highly classified, and we barely escaped with our lives. However, it was well worth the risk, because what we saw was also completely awesome.

Activision was demoing Spec Ops, a new cooperative mode in Modern Warfare 2 that is completely independent from the single-player campaign and online multiplayer modes. Spec Ops places you and a partner in a series of short and medium-length missions with varying objectives and settings. The missions are meant to be standalone affairs, similar to the airplane rescue mission at the end of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and each mission will see players controlling different operatives with a pre-determined arsenal of weaponry and equipment. Activision was mum on how many missions will ship on the retail disc, but did state that the architecture of the game would allow for additional missions to be added via downloadable content. Start saving your money now!

The Spec Ops mission that we were shown involved the two operatives attempting to eliminate a terrorist cell of unknown allegiance after breaching through a wall with an explosive charge. The players began by priming and placing the charge on the wall, then waiting patiently for the charge to announce their arrival. When the charge exploded and the players spun into action, the game entered slow-motion, illustrating the confusion amongst the terrorist ranks while the room filled with dust and debris. The operatives wasted little time and used this confusion to their advantage, eliminating several enemies before the speed returned to normal and the terrorists regrouped. Moments later, as the dust cleared, the operatives found themselves in what appeared to be the shower room of an abandoned prison. If you seen The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, the inspiration for this scene is immediately obvious. Targeting lasers swept across the room from the balconies above, enemy soldiers took cover and engaged in suppressing fire, and the room erupted into utter chaos.

The action seemed very similar to that of the original Modern Warfare, with knife kills and penetrating cover, but with a few new gameplay additions, like the ability to pick up and use a riot shield. With experienced players at the helm, it wasn’t long before the mission was over, but Activision encouraged us to try it again, stating that each experience will be different. We were more than happy to oblige.

Similar to the Terrorist Hunt mode found in Rainbow Six: Vegas, the missions in Spec Ops will involve a variety of random components. The enemies will spawn in random places, and each one will be outfitted with a random assortment of equipment. Activision also stated that there are some rare enemies that will be tougher to beat that will make an appearance from time to time to keep players on their toes. The mission objectives and player characters will remain specific to each individual mission, but beyond that, nothing is set in stone.

As players complete missions, new ones will unlock and may be played in any order. Once again, we were not told how many missions will appear in the final version of the game, but we were told that Spec Ops mode actually rivals the single-player campaign in length, so we expect there to be plenty. Spec Ops mode can be played with a maximum of two players via online or local split-screen, so find a friend and start training now.

With an exciting single-player campaign, an extremely robust multiplayer mode, and the addition of Spec Ops, Modern Warfare 2 will have plenty to offer. It’s easy to see why many have predicted that this game will surpass sales records worldwide, as it has already surpassed our expectations.

Find out how easy it is to do a 720 Nosegrab in the peripheral-packed Tony Hawk: Ride.

Activision had perhaps the biggest presence at X’09, demonstrating three games: Tony Hawk: Ride, DJ Hero, and Modern Warfare 2. I got a chance to try out the latest in the extreme sports simulator, and it was surprisingly easy to play. I am not the most deft biped out there, despite my years of kung fu training. I could only handle up to a five step difficulty in DDR. But the skateboard-shaped control device proved fairly easy to manipulate.

The skateboard works like a regular skateboard, except it has four sensors at the cardinal directions. Doing tricks simply involves leaning and covering one of these sensors with a hand or foot. Leaning forward or backwards on the board does exactly what you’d expect. The use of the sensors did cause a kind of disconnect between what I was actually doing versus what was happening on the screen, so in the end it felt like I was just using a weird controller rather than actually using a skateboard. I would describe the various tricks I did, if I had any clue what I was doing. The mode that was being demonstrated was a casual mode involving a half-pipe, so it was hard to determine whether the game was too easy.

All that being said, it was a fairly fun way to kill ten minutes. I can’t help but get the feeling that it’s exactly the same game as the last Tony Hawk except with a gimmicky controller, though.

Night vision + motion controls = win?

The multi-award winning Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is coming to the Nintendo Wii on November 11, released in conjunction with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game is currently being ported to the Wii by Treyarch, the Activision studio responsible for Call of Duty 3 as well as the most recent installment in the Call of Duty franchise: World at War. After almost two years, Wii owners can finally experience the excitement and thrill of modern warfare. However, it remains to be seen whether or not Activision and Treyarch intend to implement the online component into the Wii version of the game, which was the driving factor behind the game’s phenomenal success on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. And how will the game adapt to using motion controls? While standard aiming is likely to see an improvement in mobility, we can imagine that the sniping missions will become incredibly difficult without a steady hand.

We’ll post more information and impressions on the game as they become available.

A fresh pair of goggles and I hit the street strutting.

The limited edition of Gears of War 2 landed you a golden Lancer Assault Rifle to use in online matchmaking, while Fable 2 gave you a DLC code that allowed you to dress up as a medieval Master Chief. But I don’t think any of us anticipated working night vision goggles with a Limited Edition copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

After little effort on my end I found out that a pair of similar goggles costs anywhere from $150-$300 CAN on the Internet. The Limited Edition is about $130 CAN, meaning that they will be on the low end and next to useless if and when you choose to use them. The only way I would even consider upgrading my pre-order would be if I read a review of them and am thoroughly convinced that they are worth another $50 dollars on my end. Thanks Infinity Ward, but I prefer thermal vision anyway.

Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Blur, and many more.

Activision today confirmed two dozen more tracks that will be included in the massive eighty-five song set list featured in Guitar Hero 5. From the legendary sounds of Bob Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower (perhaps this is heresy, but I’d have preferred the Hendrix version) to the Beastie Boys’ rock and hip-hop hybrid Gratitude, the game will bring a great deal of variety to the Guitar Hero music library. Numerous bands will also make their music videogame debut in Guitar Hero 5, with Band of Horses, Darkest Hour, Elliott Smith, John Mellencamp, Rose Hill Drive, The Bronx, Tom Petty, and Vampire Weekend appearing on the disc.

Here’s a list of tracks that will be available to living room rockers when Guitar Hero 5 hits the stage on September 1:

Guitar Hero 5 features a monstrous variety of bands, including Vampire Weekend and Wolfmother.

Guitar Hero 5 looks to be pretty serious about its band selection, but then again, rock ‘n roll is serious business. What I’d really like to see from music games in the future though is just to sell us the game and pre-package a pile of DLC points to be used with that game only. That way, if I hate Coldplay, for example, I won’t have them disgracing my game.

Also of note, the list includes “Queen & David Bowie” but not just “Queen”. Since I only know of one song in their collaboration, I’m going to guess Under Pressure is one of the available songs.

The full list of band is:

Mike Fahey of Kotaku had a dream – to one day play the melodious chords of Stan Bush’s The Touch, theme song from Transfomers: The Movie (1986), in a music video game. He declared that whichever music game secured the rights to the childhood anthem would be the winner, and that it would be the only music game on which he’d spend his hard-earned dollar. The community rallied behind him – petitions were signed, forums were inundated with request threads, and thousands of emails were sent to both Harmonix and Activision.

Activision answered the call.

Stan Bush’s The Touch will be available as a free download for Guitar Hero: World Tour today. Yes, today. Like the Matrix of Leadership, Activision has come to light our darkest hour. Guitar Hero: World Tour wins the war.

You got the touch, you got the power. YEAH!

You have leveled up and earned access to the 'Watch 15 Seconds of Modern Warfare 2' perk!

Activision has sent us a 15 second reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to developer Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. While the trailer doesn’t show much in the way of actual gameplay, the footage revealed is rendered entirely in real-time. Little can be gleaned about the story, but it’s clear that the game will take place in an arctic climate. Bundle up, soldiers, war is about to get a lot colder.

Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled for release on November 10th, 2009.

Making Canada’s Weapon X program proud, Deadpool dispatches enemies with style in the latest Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 character profile video. Deadpool continues to do what he does best by punching, slashing, and shooting his way through waves of nameless henchmen. Unfortunately, still troubled by his experiences in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film, the Merc with the Mouth does so in uncharacteristic silence. Don’t worry Deadpool, it hurt us too.

The over-saturation of the music game market continues as Activision announces Guitar Hero 5. The latest installment in the franchise will feature the option to customize the make-up of your band, allowing for any combonation of instruments and performers. The all-drums band of my dreams will finally be a reality!

Guitar Hero 5 will also feature new game modes, such as Party Play and Rockfest, allowing fans of the series to experience the game in a variety of new ways. According to Activision, these modes will also become available for Guitar Hero: World Tour, providing players with the option to sample them before committing to the newer version.

Party Play: An all-new mode allowing players to seamlessy jump-in or drop-out of the Guitar Hero experience.

Rockfest: A comprehensive, competitive experience featuring five new head-to-head modes playable online or in your living room; and the ability to play the entire set-list from the first time the game is turned on.

Guitar Hero 5 will feature 85 new music tracks, from bands such as Kings of Leon, The Rolling Stones, The White Stripes, Santana, Vampire Weekend, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, plus more than 30 artists from a variety of music genres that will be making their music game debut. In addition to these artists, all previously released Guitar Hero: World Tour downloadable tracks will be fully compatible with Guitar Hero 5.

Confirmed songs include:
The Rolling Stones – Sympathy for the Devil
Bob Dylan – All Along The Watchtower
The White Stripes – Blue Orchid
Santana – No One To Depend On (LIVE)
Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire
Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire

No release date has been announced, but I can’t wait to play All Along The Watchtower to find out which of my friends are actually Cylons.
